In the Mediterranean countries, there is a growing concern about water scarcity and its cost, which imposes the need to implement measures that allow its use in an efficient and sustainable way. This study aimed to characterize water consumption patterns, objectives and practices associated with the use of water in national wineries. The results obtained in this study, which involved the participation of 18 national wineries, indicate that more than three quarters of the wineries do not know their annual water consumption, nor the quality of their residual water. However, they show concern about some sustainability indicators. For the wine industry to be able to integrate a strategy based on the green economy, it is essential to invest in monitoring and innovation, resulting in a better resources management.
