This case study explores how History Education is integrated into the educational projects of school groups in a Portuguese municipality. Favouring a methodological approach based on document analysis, it can be seen that – despite the emphasis on students' civic education, with a focus on developing skills, critical thinking, and participation – there is an explicit lack of actions aimed at teaching and learning History. Although it is mentioned occasionally, about multiculturalism and valuing the identity of everyone, its presence as an autonomous curricular component is hardly (if at all) valued in those documents that guide school institutions.
Therefore, this study highlights the need for a real reflection on the area of History (taught and learned) in the curricular options of the different educational organisations, and its possible formative potential, given the fact that a certain ghostly status has been conferred on this area of knowledge.
